Do you take days off?
One of my clients asked me this the other day and I smiled. Of course, I do! Why? I’m of no use to anyone if I work 7 days in a row.
If you don’t know me very well, I’m a huge advocate of self-care and there are three things that I support wholeheartedly:
  1. Days off. They are necessary when you are an entrepreneur, a parent, business professional, or living breathing human being. Days off are crucial to staying clear-headed, motivated, and frankly, sane. Needing a day off doesn’t mean you’re weak, it means you’re human. The time to recharge your batteries is much needed to stay operating at your peak.
  2. Sleep. Sleep helps heal your body, improve your memory and helps spur creativity. Waking up feeling rested sets you up to be in a good mood and feel energized without caffeinating your way through the day. Personally, I know myself and I can’t function properly if I don’t get an average of 8-9 hours of sleep per night. How many hours of sleep is necessary for you to thrive? Know your number. Honor your number. Just because this is the city that never sleeps doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t.
  3. Bodywork. I love Massage. Receiving and especially giving. This fast-paced New York life that we live is detrimental to our bodies. In this city, we receive so much negative stimulus and touch. Getting shoved on the subway, bumped in the street, constantly hearing sirens and arguments. It slowly chips away at you. It keeps you on edge. You find that you’re now making yourself small so that you don’t offend other people. I’m glad that you found me because that means that massage is one of your favorite forms of Bodywork. There’s also, acupuncture, chiropractic, the list goes on and on. But the human body needs and craves touch.
Now, you might be thinking things like: but I’m too busy. I have a business to run. I have a job to do. I have the kids at home. I don’t have the time. You might even be thinking that it’s selfish of you to take the time for yourself.
Instead, I invite you to think of it this way: by taking care of yourself first you’ll be feeling rested and clear-headed. You’ll have energy as You will be capable of working through your day with EASE and knock things off your to-do lists because you’ll have the energy. You’ll be able to do some of your best work when you’re operating with a full tank and now can now do more for others.
Don’t let anyone, including yourself, make you feel guilty for what is necessary to make you feel grounded, at peace, and happy. Give yourself permission to take days off, get a good night’s rest and a massage often. The shift that will happen in your life will be for the better and everything else will begin to fall into place.
